Popper and Jigging Techniques

The Gulf of Chiriquí is a wonderland for those passionate about throwing poppers or dropping jigs. When it comes to poppers, we have some of the most epic topwater experiences in all of fishing.

Offshore, the pinnacle of the popper experience involves tuna fishing. Throwing a topwater into a tuna frenzy is an experience like no other. Pop, pop, smash!

Next thing you know your reel is singling, line melting into the sea. The fish could be 20 pounds, it could be larger than 200.

We also catch dorado on topwaters. We’ve even had sailfish take a swipe.

Inshore, the headliner is catching a roosterfish or cubera on a topwater. The crest of a roosterfish knifing through the water as it assaults the Yo-Zuri is the kind of thing that will keep you up at night.

When a big cubera mashes a popper, it looks like the explosion of a hand grenade. This sensation is followed by a run powerful enough that you might think it will turn your spinning reel inside out.

The other charm of throwing a popper inshore is the incredible variety of fish that you might catch. It could be one of a dozen or more species of jack, snapper, grouper, trevally—even something else entirely.

We proudly fish Yo-Zuri topwaters and stick baits. They catch fish and they stand up to all of the rigors that we put them through.

Jigging

All of the bottom structure here makes for great jigging opportunities. We catch an incredible variety of fish when doing so.

There are times when we drop jigs to suspended schools of tuna offshore as well. If jigging is your thing, let us know and we’ll be ready.

All of our boats have a variety of jigging outfits on board. But if you have your own, you’re welcome to bring that too.
