Wahoo

How do you make a clicker scream bloody murder? Hook a wahoo.

We catch good numbers of wahoo here and are always happen when we do. Blue torpedoes, the first run of a big wahoo makes you wonder if you’ve hooked a submarine.

Our most common wahoo fishing method is to troll Yo-Zuri plugs rigged on wire. Wahoo have a mouth full of teeth that are sharp enough to cut you if you look at them too long.

The wahoo stack up at certain times of year and on certain tides. When this happens, often around high spots or submerged structure, we’ll break out the plugs.

We also get wahoo bites when live baiting—sometimes on blue runners, sometimes on live bonito. The hook up rate on live bait is lower because wahoo will often bite short—cutting the bait cleanly in half—or cut the leader with their teeth.

That said, we’ve caught plenty of wahoo on fluorocarbon leaders—with circle hooks pegged in such a way to keep the line away from the teeth.

Wahoo are among the most delicious fish in the ocean. Composed of clean, firm white meat, they make great sashimi and ceviche. It’s also really hard to beat grilled or sauteed wahoo.
