Capt. Wild Bill Visits our Panama Fishing Lodge!

June 22-26/2016 Panama Fishing Report – We fished four days and with an awesome group of guys here at Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge the dates of June 22-26, 2016. Our buddy Ozzy Delgado from our new corporate sponsor Grundéns organized this trip to field test Grundéns brand new line of high end sport fishing clothing and brought along with him celebrity guest angler Capt. “Wild” Bill from the Discovery Channel’s popular show the “Deadliest Catch”, owner of King Sailfish Mounts Raymond Douglas, Scott Ruprecht from Pacific Fins Lodge in Guatemala, and photographer extraordinaire/Editor of Florida Sport Fishing Magazine Steve Dougherty all here to our Panama fishing lodge on Isla Paridas.

The Yellowfin Tunas really showed up this year in big numbers here in the Gulf of Chiriqui and these guys were lucky to show up when the bite was wide open! It was really a great time here as over the trip we caught Tunas on live baits, chunking dead sardines, poppers, and jigs. Capt. Wild Bill caught his largest Yellowfin Tuna ever on our first drop on the first day that went about 130 pounds! I got to yell at him a few times…like he does to his deck hands on the show…and he took it like a champ. He really is a nice down to earth guy and was a pleasure to fish and hang out with here at our Panama fishing lodge. Steve got his personal best YFT that went 110 pounds…on a spinning rod! Pure mayhem as we had multiple double headers while drifting baits over the high spot at Hannibal Bank, 100 pound tunas skyrocketing on baits, pitching baits to frenzied Tunas behind a commercial boat, and crazy stuff that none of these guys had ever seen before in their lives!

June 22-26/2016 Panama Fishing Report con’t – At the end of one day we found a big pod of Porpoises, out in open water, feeding on a massive ball of sardines with a huge school of Tunas in tow. We caught 5 or 6 YFTs on poppers out of the frenzy and the guys were all tired from reeling in fish. Raymond got the idea to take the hooks off of one of the poppers and cast into the frenzy for a photo op…and Wow!…Steve and Ozzy got some awesome shots! We didn’t have so much luck each day with the inshore bite but we did have one great afternoon where we caught 3 Roosterfish…back to back to back…that coincidentally were Ozzy’s first and second Roosterfish he ever caught!

Thanks so much to Ozzy, Grundéns, and these guys for the business! Be sure to check out Steve Dougherty’s article and awesome photos from the trip to our Panama fishing lodge in this month’s Florida Sport Fishing Magazine entitled “Mercury Rising”!
