March/2017 Panama Fishing Report – We were super busy the month of March 2017 here at Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge. We fished 22 days hosting 7 great groups here on Isla Paridas at our upscale lodge 12 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama in the heart of the Gulf of Chiriqui. The Tunas have really started to move up into the gulf here as the yearly cycle seems to be starting a bit early. For the most part we had some real good luck with the Tunas offshore. We did have a couple of days where we couldn’t get them to bite but made up for it inshore with a Roosterfish or a Cubera Snapper!

John and Pete from New York returned to fish with us again but this time they brought Bronya along to help.  The fishing was a bit slow but the political discussions we got into each evening were pretty exciting! Although it was slow…we did manage to get a couple of really nice fish like Pete’s 150 pound plus Yellowfin Tuna he caught on one of our brand new Accurate SR-30 spinning reels after an epic battle and Bronya’s 50 pound Cubera Snapper we released at Isla Montuosa! Not so bad guys!

Rudy, Sat, Raz, Pedro, and Anibal from Miami were next and these guys were a great bunch of guys to be around! We had some great fun with the Tunas on the first day…but didn’t do so great the second day. It didn’t matter as these guys were great sports and really enjoyed themselves. Looking forward to seeing you guys back next year!

Greg, Chuck, and Max returned for the third time and like every time they have been here they got lucky! This time we only fished two days but we hooked a couple of 200 pound Yellowfin Tunas that put a hurting on their backs that they won’t forget! Thanks so much for the continued business guys!

Next up was Capt. Gene Kelly and Canoe Bob from Montauk New York. We had some great action with these guys over a couple of days as we concentrated on the inshore species. We ran into some dirty water at one of my go-to spots but switched things up the next day and made up for it as we caught and released a bunch of real nice Cubera Snappers and Roosterfish the following days! Great time fishing and hanging out with Gene and Bob!

The next group was also from New York…Ted, his son James, and Bob. The first couple of days with these guys we had some great luck inshore with the Roosters. Thank God…as the Tunas were not biting offshore! We did have more luck the last couple of days with the Tunas and James got an amazing last minute Black marlin that went over 500#!!! Way to go James!!!

Raoul fished with us a couple of days offshore and we had a pretty awesome time! We didn’t exactly slay the Tunas as we only caught two…the two days we fished… but we saw some pretty amazing stuff out at Hannibal Bank. We actually had a few bites of some BIG Tunas but as luck would have it they got away. We had one big Tuna hit an artificial we casted into a huge school of frenzied Tunas busting the surface that nearly peeled all the line off one of our big spinning reels before popping the line! Raoul had another fish on and fought it for for about 20 minutes before it pulled the hook! We also had a Whale Shark swimming around our boat one day for about an hour! Pretty cool! Also we caught and released a nice Roosterfish right near the lodge on our way home one day. Thanks so much Raoul!

Last, but certainly not least was the crew from New York and California. Robbie, Rick, Jonathan, Casey, Matt, and Harvey joined us for a few awesome days of fun and fishing. The fishing the first day was awesome as we slayed the Tunas at Hannibal Bank with Robbie and Jonathan. The next couple of days however the fishing was a bit slower offshore.  The Tunas were not as receptive as the days prior and it was a bit tough. We missed a couple of good shots that were heartbreakers but these guys were great sports…patience paid and we got a few really nice Tunas! Really awesome time hanging with these guys and they really got along well with Chef Lee!

Thank you so much to all our anglers! All of us here at Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge really appreciate your support!

Captain Shane Jarvis
